Case description
On 13 July 2016 at about 23:30, a witness in Saintes (17) watched a very bright stationary white light southwest in a clear night sky for 30 seconds. Only 1 account was collected. The same witness reported SAINTES (17), 21.03.2016, identified as Jupiter near the Moon.
GEIPAN identifies another celestial object, either Mars or Saturn, both just left of the Moon. All 3 were low in the sky. The witness's sketch fits a view of only 1 of them, with the other 2 hidden by a tree right of the UAP and a building to its left. GEIPAN reasons that the first-quarter Moon would likely have been mentioned if visible.
A passing cloud could have hidden the light after 30 seconds. GEIPAN attributes the impression of departure at enormous speed to interpreting fading as sudden movement away. It classifies the case as A: astronomical observation.
