Open this case in the interactive AtlasCase description
On the evening of 14 August 2016, a holidaymaker beside a beach in the Gorges de la Cèze near Méjannes-le-Clap was watching the starry sky when a point of light passed very rapidly, 'like a shooting star'. Its trajectory was initially straight, then the witness saw a zigzag before a rock hid it. One account was collected. GEIPAN rates the case as moderately unusual and having good evidential strength: there is a single witness and no photograph, but the account is fairly precise. The investigation report considers a meteor a possible explanation. The description strongly resembles a meteor, although the reported zigzags at the end are uncommon in this type of misidentification. After doing his own research, the witness accepted the hypothesis. Meteor observation reporting sites did not provide certain confirmation. The case is classified B: probable misidentification of a meteor.
