On 25 August 2016, a family was watching the starry sky with a telescope. At 22:30 they saw with the naked eye a very fast phenomenon consisting of 5 yellow-orange lights tinged reddish, described in the summary as arranged in a V. No particular sound was heard during the sighting, which lasted under 5 seconds. The only account collected says the UAP obscured stars as it passed.
The case has moderate strangeness and good evidential support: several witnesses, but 1 fairly precise account. The investigation concludes that a fragmented meteor is probable (see the investigation report).
Several explanations were considered:
- Sky lanterns were excluded because of the UAPs' shape and movement contrary to the wind.
- Birds lit by streetlights might explain the sighting, but the very high speed and lights following one another in line fit poorly.
- A fragmented meteor, too faint for FRIPON detection, can explain the reported shape, rapid movement in line, color and obscuration of stars, according to the investigation.
The case is classified B: probable misidentification of a fragmented meteor.
