Case description
On 14 February 2017 at 19:56, a witness in a car on the Paris ring road noticed a stationary white point of light in the sky and photographed it with a mobile phone. The observation lasted 2–3 minutes. When traffic moved forward, the witness lost sight of the UAP. Only 1 account was collected.
The case has low strangeness and moderate evidential support: a single witness and a photograph, but an account submitted several months later. It is a very probable misidentification of Venus (see the investigation report).
The description and photograph strongly support this explanation. The object was white and bright, remained stationary for several minutes, and lay in a direction closely matching Venus, which was particularly bright that evening. The only remaining doubt concerns its true angular elevation. This was in any event moderate, since the witness was inside a car with a restricted upward field of view. A single streetlamp is the only urban feature visible, preventing an exact location from being established, and the photograph appears to be tilted sideways.
The witness reported only 1 bright white object ahead. GEIPAN reasons that if the UAP had been something other than Venus, the witness should have described 2 fairly similar objects relatively close together in the sky. However, uncertainty about the true angular elevation prevents formal confirmation.
The case is classified B: probable misidentification of Venus.
