During the night of 28 February–1 March 2017 at about 02:00 in Bron (69), a witness noticed an unusual glow in the sky. He described a large matte-black boomerang-shaped craft with white lights and flashing orange lights. It seemed stationary and silent. Surprised and nearly frightened, he sat down on his living-room sofa. When he resumed looking, the UAP was gone. Only 1 account was collected.
His fear limited the information available. He did not continue watching long enough to establish any movement or describe how the sighting ended. GEIPAN considers the available details compatible with a group of orange and white sky lanterns. A weekday night is less typical for a festive release, although a birthday need not fall on a weekend. The perceived dark shape does not exclude lanterns: GEIPAN notes that witnesses often perceive a dark structure connecting separate lights. Without an observed direction of travel, the hypothesis cannot be strengthened by comparison with the wind.
No civil or military flight-traffic record explains the sighting, though the source notes that radar does not always detect low-flying objects. GEIPAN lacks enough information for an assessment. It considers the unusualness limited because a lantern release remains compatible with the account.
The case is classified as C: lack of information.
