Open this case in the interactive AtlasCase description
On 8 July 2017 at about 23:45, a witness and his wife in Wahagnies (59) saw 2 orange disks following the same path in a clear sky. Several more appeared. The narrative says they came from the east, Gondecourt, and headed southwest toward Ostricourt. No sound was heard. The witness took 5 photographs but did not supply them. Only 1 account was collected.
GEIPAN finds the colors and shapes consistent with sky lanterns, which can look like disks when low and seen from beneath. Infoclimat data give wind from north-northeast toward south-southwest. The analysis says this could produce the path seen from the ground, describing it there as north to southwest, rather than the narrative's east-to-southwest. The summer weekend timing favors celebrations involving lantern releases. GEIPAN classifies the case B: probable sky lanterns.
