Case description

On 12 October 2017 at 06:20, a witness at his kitchen window in Nogent-sur-Marne (94) saw a very bright phenomenon consisting of about 10 blue objects descending through the night sky. It lasted 1–2 seconds before trees hid it. Only 1 account was collected. GEIPAN considered a fireball or distress flare; see the investigation report. It ruled out the fireball because dedicated networks made no detection and clouds were present in the viewing direction. With moderate strangeness and poor evidential substance, 1 witness and no photograph, a distress flare fired by a private individual is more consistent, but cannot be formally established from a single account. GEIPAN rules out a flare from nearby Fort de Nogent because pyrotechnics are prohibited there. The case is classified C: unidentifiable because of insufficient reliable information, although a distress flare is favoured.
