Case description

On 25 February 2018 at 03:30, a driver saw a white ball of light in a clear, starry sky. It seemed to move and stopped when he stopped the car. No sound was heard. His female passenger filmed it. Only 1 account was collected. GEIPAN considers this a clear illustration of the ‘following light’ illusion caused by misidentifying a celestial object while travelling. The video records the phenomenon during the journey. The impression begins when the witness fails to recognize the celestial object. While the car holds a roughly constant heading, it stays in the same position relative to the vehicle while the landscape passes. If perceived as a nearby UAP, it seems to travel parallel to the car, reproducing its starts and stops. When the car changes heading, the object’s position relative to the road changes. The video illustrates these impressions. The attached reconstruction at 2 points on the route, once with Jupiter along the road’s axis and once to the left, unequivocally identifies the very bright planet. GEIPAN classifies the case A: observation of Jupiter.
