On 30 September 2018 at about 01:45, T1 and her husband T2 were driving home to Manthelan (37) after an evening event in Reignac-sur-Indre (37). On the D58, they saw 3 stationary orange lights over fields through the trees, forming a triangle, described in the source summary as a right-angled triangle. The sighting lasted a few minutes before the lights disappeared. The summary describes the observers as a driver and female passenger.
Evidential support is moderate, with 2 accounts but no photographs or video. GEIPAN defines evidential consistency as the amount of information in an account considered reliable and objectively supported.
The only hypothesis retained is 3 sky lanterns probably released from a nearby hamlet or village during a private party (see the investigation report). Their color, shape, brightness and number fit. The light wind and the car's movement could explain their apparent immobility. A Saturday night into Sunday is also a plausible time for festive releases.
Such lanterns generally last no more than 15 minutes, consistent with a sighting lasting a few minutes. Because the release location could not be identified and evidence is moderate, the case is classified B: probable group of 3 sky lanterns.
