Case description

On several occasions in January 2019 and again in January 2020, a witness in Guadeloupe made long nighttime observations of a moving light with changing colors and particularly unusual flashing, recording several videos. The case has low strangeness and moderate evidential support: 1 account lacking precision, but several videos. It is identified as Sirius. The videos strongly resemble a bright, intensely twinkling star. Unstable air aloft commonly causes brightness changes, apparent geometric movement and color changes through atmospheric dispersion, especially for celestial objects low above the horizon. Recurrence over several nights also suggests astronomical misidentification. Cross-checks place Sirius precisely in the viewing direction; the witness had overestimated its elevation. Its characteristic colored flashes match the reported color variations in every respect. The case is classified A: Sirius. GEIPAN defines evidential consistency as the amount of information in an account considered reliable and objectively supported.
