CAMPSEGRET (24) 01.06.2019

On Saturday 1 June 2019 at about 23:30, a motorist in Campsegret (24) saw about 30 white lights moving across a clear sky. He stopped and got out, hearing no sound. The group appeared to the north, finally headed west and disappeared at the horizon. He reported it first to GEIPAN and then the gendarmerie. The information was complete, with representative drawings but no photograph or video. Only 1 account was collected. GEIPAN finds low strangeness and good evidential substance from this fairly precise single account. It considers a group of sky lanterns very probable; see the investigation report. About 30 lights moving together with the wind on a Saturday night are typical of lanterns probably released for a party or wedding. The witness rejected this after an internet check suggested the path did not fit the wind. GEIPAN considers that he very likely made an error in that check, since the wind was from east-northeast or northeast. The case is classified B: probable misidentification of sky lanterns.
