A witness reported that on 30 June 2019 at 00:05, after opening a window at home in Angers (49) to watch the stars, his attention was caught by one that disappeared and reappeared to one side at random. The witness, a minor, told his parents the next day.
GEIPAN received the account on 16 February 2020. The witness said he had been looking south, that the Moon was visible in the east and that the sky was clear. Only 1 account of the phenomenon was collected.
GEIPAN found that the Moon did not rise that day until 02:04 and was 6.8% illuminated, so it could not have been visible at the reported sighting time. Weather websites also recorded 8/8 cloud cover, meaning a completely overcast sky, contrary to the witness's description. The reported circumstances thus did not match the astronomical and weather conditions for that place and time, making the reported date and time highly unlikely.
On 29 March 2021, GEIPAN contacted the witness's father and asked him to check the date and time with his son. The father replied that he had checked the video and camera dates and that the dates they had supplied were correct. His son clearly remembered seeing the Moon that night. He added that, even if the time was incorrect, they were certain of the month, June.
GEIPAN considered that this response did not establish the day and time. It concluded that the sighting could not have occurred on 30 June at 00:05, but might have taken place later that day or at the stated time on a different June date. Without resolving this, a meaningful assessment was impossible.
GEIPAN classifies the case as C for lack of usable information.
