LANDOUZY-LA-VILLE (02), Picardie, France
Open this case in the interactive AtlasCase description
Beginning on 7 August 2019 at 23:28 and continuing for more than 1 hour 30 minutes into 8 August, 2 people in Landouzy-la-Ville (02) observed lights with the naked eye and binoculars. They recorded 6 phone videos. Only 1 account was collected; the case title uses 8 August.
GEIPAN rates strangeness and evidential consistency as moderate: 2 witnesses and videos, but an imprecise account. The third phenomenon was probably Arcturus; the first 2 cannot be identified for lack of data. See the investigation report.
The third light's appearance, color, brightness and viewing direction closely match Arcturus, and its rapid color changes are typical scintillation. The reported rapid movements and jellyfish shape initially conflict with this explanation. GEIPAN argues that the very long observation rules out rapid movement and attributes the jellyfish appearance to poor binocular optics, since it does not appear in the videos. It classifies the third phenomenon A: very probable misidentification of Arcturus. The first 2 remain unidentifiable and unsuitable for further analysis because of insufficient data.
