Case description

On 27 January 2020, a lone witness driving on the D96 in Theizé, on the route toward Lyon identified by the case title, briefly saw a distant UAP to his right. As he approached, he pulled onto the roadside and watched for about 20 seconds. It appeared elongated and stationary, composed of many differently sized cubes in shades from grayish white to black. It seemed to emit heat that distorted its visual appearance. He tried to photograph it with his phone but lost sight of it for about 2 seconds. When he looked again, its appearance had changed substantially: it now resembled a small light aircraft, white-gray with black stripes. It moved slowly and disappeared behind a house roof. The case has low evidential strength*: a single witness, no photograph or video of the UAP, and a report made more than 2 years later, in 2022 according to the card summary. *Under GEIPAN's criteria, evidential strength is the amount of information collected for an account that is considered reliable and objectively substantiated. Three hypotheses were considered: a light aircraft, an aircraft spraying vineyards, and a model aircraft. Appearance and behavior in the last phase match a small airplane in every respect (see investigation report). Vineyard spraying was judged unlikely because of operational constraints including plot size, altitude restrictions and potential nuisance to neighbors. A model aircraft was ruled out because the observation area was too far from designated flying areas. A nearby airfield supports a small-aircraft or glider hypothesis. However, the local flying club reported no flights recorded that day. The long reporting delay prevented further checks with CNOA, the National Air Operations Center, or specialized private platforms. This hypothesis does not explain the unusual appearance during the second observation phase. The witness himself raised a possible perceptual error, which remains unproven. The delay of over 2 years is a major obstacle to analysis and severely limits hypothesis checking. Memory may change over such a period, with an effect on reliability that is difficult to quantify. This uncertainty nevertheless does not invalidate the witness's reported sense of strangeness. The case is classified C: a phenomenon not explained because information and technical evidence needed for detailed analysis are lacking.
