Open this case in the interactive AtlasCase description
On 22 February 2020 at about 21:00, a witness at home in Saint-Christoly-Médoc saw a distant, very bright point twinkling strongly compared with the stars. To the naked eye it seemed stationary. Through binoculars and the phone's zoom it looked like a gold-colored cut diamond. The light brightened, then dimmed and faded into the night. The observation lasted about 45 minutes.
The evidence is good, with photographs and videos plus a reconstruction photograph locating the UAP (see the investigation report). The investigation identified Venus, present in the reported direction and at the stated time, and described as the brightest object in the night sky that evening.
The unusual diamond shape through binoculars and phone zoom resulted from optical and imaging effects caused by poor adjustment and focus. Disappearance was probably due to a high cloud layer gradually obscuring it, producing the impression of fading into the sky.
The case is classified A: Venus.
