MONTPELLIER (34) 18.07.2020

At 22:10 on 18 July 2020, a witness in his bedroom in Montpellier saw a stationary white luminous ball in an unfamiliar position in the sky. His bedroom window afforded a particularly open view that he regularly photographed. He then saw it move, with luminous emanations appearing behind it. He recorded video and photographs on his phone before it left his field of view. Only 1 account was collected. GEIPAN assessed the case as very low in strangeness and very well supported by a fairly precise account, video and photographs despite the single witness. It identified Air France flight AF7684 arriving from Paris at Montpellier; see the investigation report and the witness's images. The description and appearance were typical of an airliner approaching head-on. The Air France A320 operating AF7684 followed a matching trajectory at precisely the reported time. The reported silence was consistent with its passing 2 km from the observation point. GEIPAN classified the case A: misidentification of flight AF7684.
