On 5 August 2020 around 19:00, 4 hikers at Mont Mézenc (07) saw a luminous object floating and apparently rotating. They described “a large silvery-white Moon” or “a big bubble.” Only 1 submitted an account, taking photographs throughout its silent movement until it disappeared into the sky, plus a short video showing it heading south-southeast.
The detailed account, photographs and video make the evidence strong; without them a conclusion would have been difficult.
Analysis identifies a novelty Mylar balloon, perhaps shaped like Q, O or 0, released or lost not far away (see investigation report). Supporting evidence is:
1. A letter shape is visible in 1 photograph. The aluminized surface intermittently reflects sunlight strongly, producing characteristic flashes seen both directly and in the photographs.
2. IPACO measurements support a balloon 0.80 or 1 m in size, at estimated distances of about 215–320 m in the first part and 1,870–2,300 m in the second, within theoretical visual-resolution limits.
3. Initial slow, irregular motion with rotations and course changes fits low-altitude terrain effects. Later, steadier straight motion fits the general southward airflow.
GEIPAN classifies the case A: Mylar balloon observation.
