Around 23:20 on 22 October 2020, a witness at Bono (56) observed a triangular UAP, first with the naked eye and then through binoculars. It was intensely yellow, luminous but not dazzling, with black horizontal and vertical lines described along its edges and in the centre. It lay above and to the right of the left pier of the Joseph le Brix bridge, carrying the D101 over the Auray River, west of the witness.
GEIPAN judged the evidential strength good despite the single witness. The account was complete, with precise landmarks, and a clear sketch compensated for the lack of a photograph. GEIPAN defines evidential strength as the quantity of information considered reliable that is collected for an account.
The investigation identified the Moon; see the report. The UAP's position matched the Moon close to setting, and the yellow colour matched its appearance near the horizon. GEIPAN describes the phase as first quarter and explains that it could look triangular if the landscape hid its lower part.
The black lines seen through binoculars could have been branches, aerials or even the bridge railing superimposed on the Moon. Its apparent rapid movement away could be explained by the Moon disappearing at the horizon after a few minutes. GEIPAN found this explanation accounted for the reportedly rapid, steady recession, triangular shape and colour, and classified the case A: observation of the Moon.
