Case description
Between 11 and 20 November 2020, 2 witnesses in Carlux (24) repeatedly saw moving lights at night that they regarded as craft. Observations were intermittent and very long, sometimes lasting several hours. One witness filmed the UAPs.
The astronomical analysis found that Sirius, Jupiter, Saturn and Mars matched the described and filmed positions precisely; see the investigation report. This explanation also accounts for slow motion over several hours through Earth's rotation. GEIPAN attributes the shape seen through binoculars to the exceptional conjunction of Jupiter and Saturn.
The case has very good evidential substance, strengthened by repeated observations by the 2 witnesses, including observations made with the investigator. Confusion with celestial bodies explains most characteristics.
GEIPAN reiterates the precise positional matches and states that the Jupiter–Saturn conjunction may have increased confusion. Earth's rotation explains the slow movements; brief movements may result from optical effects associated with autokinesis. It considers the astronomical explanation sufficient, with ephemerides providing proof.
The case is classified A, a fully explained phenomenon: astronomical misidentification.
