[AERO AF422] DE PARIS (75) VERS BOGOTA (COG.), Ile-de-France, France
Open this case in the interactive AtlasCase description
During the Paris–Bogotá night flight AF422 on 9 December 2020, a pilot and a female colleague saw a rapidly moving white light on 3 occasions. It was oblong, “like a grain of rice,” and intensely bright, recalling a maritime lighthouse when its beam reaches an observer at night. The total observation lasted 15–20 seconds, with no visible trail. Only 1 account was collected.
Its high angular speed and abrupt, intense flashes, switching on and off sharply, seemed unlike sunlight reflected from a satellite (see the investigation report).
The evidence is moderate: 2 direct but non-independent witnesses, both familiar with atmospheric reentries, high-altitude aircraft and satellite passes, but no photographs or video. Strangeness is not high despite the lack of a known explanation. Radar data for the area could not be obtained; these might have strengthened an aircraft hypothesis.
Without the second witness's account or additional data, the case is classified C: insufficient reliable information.
