On 12 June 2022 at about 18:10 in Chanteloup-en-Brie (77), a witness in his swimming pool saw a white light contrasting with the blue sky, about 40° above the southern horizon. It disappeared after about 10 seconds. He continued swimming laps, then looked back out of curiosity, hoping to see it again, and did. He left the pool to fetch his mobile phone and took photographs and 2 videos. He described the UAP as a very bright disk, intermittently visible and, in his view, stationary to the south. After 15–20 minutes, he became bored and stopped watching.
GEIPAN considers the evidence good: although there was only 1 account, 2 photographs and 2 videos could be examined and analyzed (see the investigation report). In GEIPAN's terminology, evidential consistency means the amount of information in an account considered reliable.
The investigation examined the hypothesis of a highly reflective Mylar novelty balloon, supported by the following:
- Analysis of the photographs revealed slight, slow movement along a straight path. It may have been toward the southeast, matching the wind direction at the time up to an altitude of about 1,500 m.
- Its appearance fully matches such a balloon. Its aluminized envelope reflects sunlight very strongly and intermittently, depending on which surface faces the Sun and how the balloon rotates in the wind.
The UAP's small angular size prevents a fully certain determination of its direction of travel or precise, reliable estimates of its possible speed.
The case is classified A: Mylar novelty balloon.
