On 15 June 2022 at 19:08, a witness sitting in his garden in Bailleul (59) noticed something shining in the daylight sky. Unable to recognize its shape, he filmed it and zoomed in with his phone. It moved slowly for 4–5 minutes and seemed to change course as it disappeared into the distance. He did not think it was an airplane, helicopter, weather balloon or drone and wanted to know what he had seen. Only 1 account was collected.
GEIPAN's investigation concludes that it was very probably a Mylar balloon, perhaps one lost by a child; see the investigation report. The shape and color support this, as does movement in the wind direction. Sunlight reflecting from an aluminized surface explains its striking brightness, while strong gusts could explain the apparent final turn. GEIPAN classifies the case A: a Mylar balloon carried by wind and illuminated by sunlight.
