Case description
On 2 September 2022 at 06:35, with a severe thunderstorm approaching, a Frontignan resident went onto his terrace. It was still dark, with heavy cloud and a low cloud base. Above a neighboring roof he saw a very bright green light flashing about once per second. Its apparent immobility intrigued him. Its position below large black clouds suggested it was not very high.
He took a photograph with his mobile phone, then fetched binoculars because the phone's zoom was limited. On returning, he found that the light had moved toward him. He left the terrace again to get a camera with a zoom lens, but by his return the UAP had disappeared.
The perceived strangeness concerned the unidentified, very bright flashing green light, initially stationary and then moving toward him.
The description strongly suggests a drone. Several drone-flight training centers and aerial-photography businesses operate around Frontignan. GEIPAN contacted DTS Drone Thau Services in Sète, which confirmed that a drone explanation was realistic, particularly given the green color and flashing. For example, the attached general-information document on Mavic drone light codes associates flashing green lights with a “safe flight” mode.
DTS Drone Thau also reported an increase in drone flights in the region in recent times. In light of these elements, residual strangeness is low.
GEIPAN classifies the case A: drone sighting.
