Case description

On 20 October 2022, at about 7 a.m., the witness was on the terrace of her home at Parthenay, Deux-Sèvres, where she observed two UAPs in the north-west direction, in the form of two yellow, high-intensity lights, stationary in the sky. These were spaced about 15 cm apart when measured by a graduated ruler held at arm’s length, each light having an apparent diameter estimated at 2 cm. After a few moments of observation, the light on the left moved very quickly to the right, leaving behind it a brief orange trail before disappearing. The witness said she was unable to describe how the second UAP disappeared: it may have gone out where it was or vanished without her noticing, and her attention was then drawn to the displacement of the first one. The total duration of the observation is estimated at approximately 15 seconds. No further testimony was received regarding this event. The evidential quality* of the case is considered to be low, due to there being only 1 witness, the absence of photographs of the UAP and the lack of response to the investigator's requests for further information. *According to the GEIPAN criteria, evidential quality is the amount of information collected for an account that is considered reliable and objectively established. The verifications conducted with the specialized services did not reveal the presence of any fixed-wing aircraft or helicopter in the area and during the observation period. Furthermore, the analysis of databases dedicated to known astronomical phenomena did not reveal any fireball passage corresponding to the temporal and directional criteria of the reported event. Finally, the hypothesis of an observation of two drones is considered unlikely, in particular due to the orange trail observed on one of the unidentified aerial phenomena (UAP), as described by the witness and recorded in the investigation report. Further information was requested from the witness to refine the search, but no response was received. GEIPAN classifies the case as "C", a phenomenon not identified due to lack of data.
