Case description
At about 1 a.m. on July 17, 1967, a 19-year-old Newville driver identified in HUMCAT as Stanley L.B., with his surname withheld, noticed a light he initially took for the Moon. It reportedly approached and positioned itself roughly 15–20 yards ahead of his car as he travelled at about 55 mph. He described an orange, roundish object approximately 10–15 feet across, with a shadowy humanlike silhouette apparently operating something inside.
When the driver slowed, the object rose above telephone wires but continued pacing him home. He called out his 17-year-old sister Joanne and her 18-year-old companion Carl B. All three watched it hovering over a field. Stanley drove away again; the object reportedly followed and returned with him. The three then thought they could discern the occupant’s form. No sound was reported, and the object disappeared while they were inside the house.
The CUFOS-preserved HUMCAT entry cites NICAP investigator Ivan Kerns’s special report dated August 29, 1967, supplied through Richard Hall. This explains why the abbreviated ledger lists three witnesses although the opening road encounter involved one. The silhouette was never described with reliable facial or bodily detail. Regional UFO activity supplies background, without independently confirming this reported pacing sequence or the interpretation of an occupant at controls.
