Open this case in the interactive AtlasCase description
On 16 March 2023, a woman in a supermarket car park at Verneuil d'Avre et d'Iton (27) noticed someone looking at a UAP in the sky and began watching it herself. She described a dark, sharply pointed triangular object that remained stationary. She immediately photographed it and watched with other people for about 5 minutes, then went into the shop. When she returned, the object was no longer visible.
GEIPAN assessed the evidential strength as good, referring to a single reporting witness despite the other observers described. Her photograph allowed its direction in the surrounding landscape to be established precisely. GEIPAN defines evidential strength as the quantity of reliable, objectively supported information collected for an account.
The appearance and stationary position suggested a kite; see the investigation report. Contacted by email, the municipal police confirmed a kite based at Saint-Nicolas Abbey, in the reported direction, whose owner had been visited by a patrol. Police provided a photograph matching the witness's UAP in every respect.
GEIPAN reconstructed its location by intersecting the viewing azimuths from the witness's and police photographs, confirming a position near Saint-Nicolas Abbey park. It classified the case A: observation of a kite.
