[N77] DE NEUVY-SAUTOUR (89) VERS SAINT-FLORENTIN (89), Bourgogne, France
Open this case in the interactive AtlasCase description
Late in the afternoon of 11 May 2023, a woman riding a bus on the N77 from Neuvy-Sautour (89) toward Saint-Florentin (89), while passing through Courcelles (89), saw a curtain of rain beneath a very dark cloud. An unidentified aerospace phenomenon seemed to emerge from it, apparently leaving a persistent gray trail along a descending, winding path. She saw the object for only 2–3 seconds and the trail for several minutes, with trees and buildings repeatedly obstructing the view. Only 1 account was collected.
The source initially describes both strangeness and evidential consistency as moderate: 1 witness and no photograph. Under GEIPAN's criteria, consistency means the amount of reliable, objectively supported information collected for an account. The investigation considered 2 separate phenomena—a bird and the upper edge of a distant cloud—but insufficient detail and the brevity of one observation prevented a conclusion; see the investigation report.
Nothing establishes a direct link between the object and the subsequent trace, because they were not seen simultaneously. They may have been independent. Their close succession and similarly shaped paths could have led the witness to interpret the second as a result of the first. Although hypotheses could be explored, GEIPAN's concluding assessment describes low strangeness and insufficient detail and classifies the case C: unidentified for lack of information.
