Open this case in the interactive AtlasCase description
On 12 November 2023, during a transatlantic flight from Mexico City toward Roissy-en-France, a pilot and crew saw lights moving along apparently random paths. They initially considered satellites but remained puzzled by the unusual display.
Strangeness is low and evidential support good: several witnesses, but 1 fairly complete account. The investigation identifies Starlink® satellite flashes (see the investigation report). GEIPAN defines evidential consistency as the amount of information in an account considered reliable and objectively supported.
Several points with varying brightness and seemingly random movements confined to one part of the sky fit this phenomenon. A Stellarium check confirmed that the UAP lay 45° above the Sun's apparent position; the Sun was between 30° and 45° below the horizon at the time.
GEIPAN provides a detailed analysis of sightings under similar illumination geometry in its website article “New phenomenon explained: Starlink satellite flashes.”
The case is classified A: Starlink® satellite flashes.
