Open this case in the interactive AtlasCase description
From their garden at La Charité-sur-Loire (58), the main witness, T1, and occasionally his wife, T2, repeatedly saw brief, white, stationary point-like flashes in the night sky. Only the 2 observations on 2 December 2023 were investigated here, because they alone had precise dates and times; see the investigation report.
GEIPAN assessed the evidential strength as moderate: there were 2 witnesses but only 1 account, with no image of the phenomenon. Although T1 had seen it many times, only the 2 December events were well documented. GEIPAN defines evidential strength as the quantity of reliable, objectively supported information collected for an account.
The description was typical of satellite flares. A detailed reconstruction of satellite passes supported this explanation for the recurring localised flashes: one satellite could match the first UAP's position, accurately established using nearby Jupiter as a reference. The second position was too imprecise to identify conclusively which of the many satellites near the zenith that evening could have produced it, or whether more than one was involved. GEIPAN classified the case B: probable satellite flares.
