MULHOUSE (68) 15.08.2024

On 15 August 2024 at about 22:45, 2 witnesses were in the street outside their Mulhouse (68) home to watch fireworks when they noticed a UAP consisting of 2 steady red lights flanking 1 flashing green light. Initially stationary above a neighbouring house, it suddenly gained speed and quickly disappeared behind that house's roof. The observation lasted about 5 minutes. T1 took 6 photographs while it was stationary, before it disappeared. GEIPAN finds moderate strangeness and a good amount of reliable, objectively supported information: 2 observers but 1 account, with photographs. It considers this probably a drone; see the investigation report. The evidential assessment concerns the quantity of such information collected for an account. T1's description and the photographs suggest a drone, with colours typical of aviation and drone lights. Hovering followed by rapid movement also fits drone capabilities. The sighting occurred just before the fireworks closing the Mulhouse fair, a good occasion for flying a drone. The town hall could not confirm this explanation because no request for drone use had been submitted, but it did not rule out use by a private individual.
