Case description

On Tuesday 29 October 2024 at about 17:35, alerted by a dog, a witness saw and filmed a UAP with a phone. It moved from the witness's left to right, southwest to northeast, then receded toward the northwest. The case has good evidential support despite only 1 witness, thanks to photographs, videos and an interview. GEIPAN defines evidential consistency as the amount of information in an account considered reliable and objectively supported. The investigation considered a windborne balloon and a drone or radio-controlled helicopter (see the investigation report). A drone or model helicopter could fit the trajectory but not the shape. Despite the UAP's proximity, the witness heard no sound, and local model-aircraft club leaders confirmed that they never fly in this area. A windborne object was retained as the explanation. Its movement matches recorded wind direction, while its shape and color fit a Mylar novelty balloon. Its rotation and rises and falls while drifting are understandable given the asymmetric envelope visible in the witness's video. The investigation did not identify where the balloon was released. GEIPAN classifies the case A: windborne Mylar novelty balloon.
