Case description

On the evening of 12 December 2024, a woman at Entremont-le-Vieux (73) first saw a bright white streak about 1.5 cm long in a clear starry sky. The source leaves unclear whether that length refers to her screen or direct field of view. It returned on each clear evening. She gradually noticed a second and third streak, apparently aligned and evenly spaced. On 31 December around 07:00, from another part of her house, she saw a streak at about 30° elevation and used her phone’s zoom to photograph it. Only 1 streak was visible to the naked eye; enlarging the image suggested a craft. The investigation established the photograph’s date and time as 31 December at 07:22, rather than 30 December as initially stated in the technical questionnaire. She also supplied a further UAP photograph from 13 January 2025 at 17:45. GEIPAN assesses strangeness as low and evidential strength as good: 1 submitted account but several witnesses and photographs. The phenomena are celestial bodies, particularly Mars and Jupiter (see the investigation report). Recurrence at the same hours over several hours, visibility only in fine weather, slow east-to-west movement and disappearance at dawn are typical of astronomy. The unusual feature is the perception of streaks. Photographic motion blur prevents precise assessment of their originally perceived lengths. Nevertheless, the account and Stellarium data identify the 31 December image with Mars and the 13 January image with Jupiter. Their negative magnitudes make them conspicuous. The case is classified A: astronomical observations of Mars and Jupiter.
