Case description

On Sunday 27 April 2025 at about 10:05, a passenger on a Transavia flight from Marseille to Tunis saw an unusual feature through a right-side window. It appeared as a dark oval resembling an eye, emerging vertically through the cloud layer as if breaking through or tearing it. Just above the clouds, it seemed to remain stationary briefly, partly visible through the ambient brightness. The passenger reported that it then tilted slowly until horizontal and parallel to the cloud layer, before fading and appearing to blend into its surroundings. He took several mobile-phone photographs and a short video. The feature was visible in the images, but distance, aircraft movement and camera instability limited their quality. GEIPAN rates the strangeness as low and the evidential support as good: one account and 2 usable photographs of the UAP. Under its criteria, evidential support is the amount of information considered reliable and objectively established that has been collected for an account. The investigation identifies the condensation trail of airliner flight ITY672 (see the investigation report). Its appearance is fully compatible with a contrail. Investigators reconstructed the flight using Flightradar24 data, synchronized to the observation time established from photograph metadata with GEIPAN's image-authentication software. ITY672's trajectory matched the observed feature. Its direction and altitude were also compatible: it flew below the observer's flight, TVF8800, but above 10,000 m and above the cloud layer, at an altitude allowing a contrail to form. GEIPAN classifies the case A: observation of a condensation trail.
