Open this case in the interactive AtlasCase description
During the night of 3–4 September 2025 in Dommartin-lès-Toul (54), a witness traveling along an unlit path beside the Toulois equestrian center reported 2 distinct luminous orbs in a partly clear sky. A red orb appeared above the treetops, moving slowly with slight changes in height but giving an overall impression of stability. The witness did not associate it with a known aircraft or celestial object. A second, larger white orb seemed stationary to the naked eye but appears to rise gradually in the photographs and videos. The witness could not identify it as a terrestrial or aerial light source. GEIPAN collected 1 account.
The strangeness chiefly reflects T1's perception. The investigation puts the apparent anomaly in perspective (see the investigation report). The remarkably precise account and useful photographs strengthen the evidence. GEIPAN defines evidential consistency as the amount of information in an account considered reliable and objectively supported.
Using Stellarium® and overlaying the photographs on reconstructed views of the sky at the observation times revealed misidentifications of Jupiter, Betelgeuse and Venus. The source identifies these 3 celestial objects without assigning each to the 2 orbs described in the opening account.
GEIPAN classifies the case A: celestial objects—Jupiter, Betelgeuse and Venus.
