Case description

On 12 October 2025 at 19:37, a witness and his brother were cycling along a farm track beside woodland in Bischwiller as night fell in calm conditions. No ambient sound was audible when the witness saw a large black object about 15–20 meters away. He estimated it at 2 meters high and 1 meter wide, at about 40° elevation. It moved slowly and steadily along a slightly descending path, silently, with no light emission or mechanical noise. Conditions remained stable, with no perceptible wind. He filmed it on an iPhone 16 Pro in 4K at 60 frames per second. The source attributes artificial brightening of the sky, an impression of greater distance and a slight change in perceived size to the device's automatic night mode. Recording used the 0.5× wide-angle setting; he could not zoom before it disappeared behind trees without changing speed or path. The whole sighting lasted a few seconds. He retained the original video with precise date, time and location metadata, documenting the event fully. The case has good evidential strength*, with an analyzable video, although only one of the two observers reported to GEIPAN. Its unfamiliar appearance under conditions preventing detail from being distinguished created the perceived strangeness. *Under GEIPAN's criteria, evidential strength is the amount of information collected for an account that is considered reliable and objectively substantiated. Only a cluster of party balloons was explored, supported by: - A map reconstruction of the observer and initial/final azimuths (appendix 1) confirms northeast-to-southwest motion. Météo-France and Météociel reports show a prevailing north-northeasterly wind. Despite slight uncertainty, the path matches the general wind direction (appendices 2–4). - A straight path. - Shape and color were hard to distinguish at twilight. - GEIPAN's IPACO image analysis clearly resolves a cluster of rounded shapes (appendix 5). - Sunday evening, with weekends favorable to celebrations using balloons. An exhaustive online search for the source of the release—function venues, cultural or sporting events and similar possibilities—was unsuccessful. It could have been a private party, birthday or other celebration. GEIPAN classifies the case B: probable observation of a cluster of party balloons. IPACO is GEIPAN's image-analysis and processing software, IPACO.fr.
