Case description

On Wednesday 29 October 2025 at 7:28 p.m., the witness travels on the D764 between Sizun and Landerneau, in the Finistère. Under a perfectly clear sky and without any surrounding sound source, he notices an unusual luminous point whose brightness exceeds that of a star. To deepen his observation and make photographs, he stops at the intersection of the D764 and the Kernévez La Cage impasse, in the commune of Ploudiry. The map provided by the witness, specifying his exact position and the trajectory of the UAP, is available in Appendix 1. The witness describes: • a white light point with a slightly blue colour, surrounded by a diffuse halo; • Two fainter beams are oriented upwards and downwards respectively; • Within the upper beam, a greyish elongated “cigar” shape reveals darker areas; • a straight movement from north-west to south-east, at about 45° elevation; • stable brightness, then progressive extinction, over a total estimated duration of two minutes. The phenomenon disappears after crossing the azimuth of the Moon. A third-party witness, located in the immediate environment of the principal observer, reports having seen the same phenomenon at the same time from his home, thus confirming the observation. The evidential strength* of the account is considered to be good: the main witness is accurate and provides a photograph, although technical analysis of it proved impossible. However, his account is corroborated by a second eyewitness who did not testify to the GEIPAN. *Under GEIPAN’s criteria, evidential strength is the quantity of information collected for an account that is considered reliable and objectively supported. The strangeness perceived by the witness is strong. The residual strangeness, after investigation, appears weak for the GEIPAN. The main hypothesis examined is that of a fuel dump from the second stage of a Falcon 9 rocket launched that same day. Chronology and orbital dynamics: On 29 October 2025, SpaceX launched a Falcon 9 rocket from Florida at 1635 UTC (1735 French legal time), taking 29 Starlink® satellites into an orbit inclined at 53°. Satellite deployment takes place approximately 55 minutes after take-off, around 1730 UTC. The second stage then begins its second revolution around the Earth. The observation by the witness from the Sizun sector (29450) occurred at approximately 1830 UTC, or 1h55 after the launch of the rocket. This time frame was the time during which passivation operations, consisting of the final discharge of the residual fuel, were usually carried out. These degassings produced very bright plumes at high altitudes, visible at a great distance when the object was still illuminated by the Sun while the ground was in twilight, a condition fulfilled that evening. Concordance with other observations: The same phenomenon was reported in Ireland between 18:25 and 18:35 UTC, with very similar descriptions: brilliant point, diffuse halo, slow displacement from west to east, no noise. The Irish media outlets Irish Examiner, WeathÉire and Ireland Live confirmed that it was a fuel dump from Falcon 9’s second stage, giving times consistent with the Brittany sighting. The observation sites in Brittany and Ireland are separated by about 600 km. At the speed of a low orbit rocket stage (~7.5 km/s), the passage over these two regions occurs in 1 to 2 minutes: this is the same orbital passage, seen successively from both places. Geometrical alignment (visual and direction): From Sizun, the phenomenon appears to the northwest, passes north / northeast, then moves south-east. This apparent trajectory is precisely that expected when an object in orbit inclined at 53° makes a passage north of the witness: the trajectory is globally west to east, but its projection in the sky from Brittany translates into an arc from NW to SE. In Ireland, located closer to the ground track, the object is described as moving from west to east, which is consistent. Brightness and morphology: The observed characteristics are perfectly compatible with a sunlit cryogenic gas plume: • white/blue colour: scattering of sunlight by ejected fuel crystals or droplets; • diffuse halo: a cloud of crystals or droplets that extends; • high and low beams: higher concentration areas of the plume, aligned with the ejection direction; • absence of noise: altitude of this orbital manoeuvre being 150 km or more; • no flashes: the object is not an aircraft, but an unlit rocket stage, only the plume of which is visible; • perceived dark areas: cast shadows or internal contrasts within the plume, the stage itself being invisible at this distance. GEIPAN classifies this case as "A": observation of the degassing of a Falcon 9 rocket stage. This phenomenon has already been the subject of numerous testimonies at the GEIPAN and a news item titled FALCON 9 and STALINK®.
