Open this case in the interactive AtlasCase description
On November 03, 2025, at 5:35 p.m., a single witness from the beach of La Grande-Motte observed 7 white, horizontally elongated UAPs. Shortly after sunset, these UAPs moved slowly to the west, some moving from left to right and others in the opposite direction. After moving for a few minutes, they gradually disappeared by decreasing in size under the effect of distance. The witness made five photographs with his smartphone, providing visual evidence for the analysis. No other witness contacted GEIPAN.
The evidential quality* of this case is good, despite a single account, because the observer’s 5 photographs support the analysis.
*According to the GEIPAN criteria, evidential quality is the amount of information collected for an account that is considered reliable and objectively established.
The strangeness experienced by the witness is important, with the UAPs presenting unusual characteristics for him.
The hypothesis of observation of condensation trails of aircraft observed from a very long distance is supported by the following:
- Long shape and white/yellow colour, typical for such trails observed during sunrise or sunset (other examples treated with GEIPAN in Appendix 1).
- In this precise context, at 17:35 and due west, the setting Sun provides low-angle illumination that makes condensation trails at cruising altitude particularly visible. As the sky already shifts into the shadow of dusk, these trails remain strongly illuminated, which accentuates their contrast and allows them to be distinguished several hundred kilometers away.
- Air-traffic data show 2 busy air corridors at ground-projected distances of 220–265 km, oriented southwest–northeast passing over the Toulouse region (see Annex 2).
- Montpellier weather observations in Appendix 3 indicate exceptionally clear air, with maximum horizontal visibility (60 km given as an indication) which promotes the visibility of condensation trails.
- The precise identification of aircraft is complex because of the traffic density in the air corridors concerned at this time of day. However, the analysis of the witness's photographs via the IPACO image processing software (Annex 4) allows for the establishment of precise technical data. Calculations determine that these aircraft are operating at cruising altitudes of between 8 and 9 km, at speeds of between 800 and 916 km/h. At the time of observation, they are at a distance from the witness estimated at 275 to 314 km.
The hypothesis developed by the investigation reduces the strangeness of this observation, therefore,
GEIPAN classifies the case into "A", observation of condensation trails of airline aircraft.
