Open this case in the interactive AtlasCase description
On 10 November 2025 at about 18:45, a witness at Saint-Séverin saw 2 stationary lights toward the southeast at an elevation of about 45°. They were markedly brighter than the surrounding celestial objects and remained still before fading away after 3 minutes, despite a clear sky. No other account was collected.
The unusual features were their brightness, apparent closeness to each other, lack of movement and gradual disappearance in a perfectly clear sky. GEIPAN assesses the evidential support as medium because there was a single witness and no photograph or video. Under GEIPAN's criteria, evidential support is the quantity of information collected for an account that is considered reliable and objectively established.
The investigation report examines 3 hypotheses. A celestial-object explanation was quickly rejected because no object of that brightness, let alone 2, was present in the southeastern sky at the time. Very bright satellites were also quickly rejected. The source broadly states that no orbiting object could remain stationary for 3 minutes, then specifically explains that the rapid motion required of low-orbit satellites is incompatible with the reported immobility.
Aircraft, particularly helicopters, remain possible. GEIPAN suggests that searchlights aimed toward the witness could account for the intense brightness and absence of audible sound. However, the air-traffic plots supplied by CAPCODA did not allow specific aircraft to be identified. CAPCODA is the French Air and Space Force's Air Operations Planning, Command and Air Defence Centre.
GEIPAN notes how difficult it is to locate lights precisely and confirm that they are stationary in a night sky without reference points. The absence of photographs or video prevents further analysis. It also concludes that their star-like appearance presents nothing particularly unusual for a night sky, despite the unusual features initially listed.
GEIPAN classifies the case C: unidentified because of insufficient data.
