On 10 December 2025 at about 23:03, a witness outside his home on the Giens peninsula saw three or four bright objects move silently at very high speed south to north through what he described as a particularly clear sky. Long green, red and blue trails suggested powerful, unusual propulsion. The scene lasted about 5 seconds.
GEIPAN attributes the strangeness to an unusual combination of brevity, high speed, several parallel trails and strongly contrasting colours (see investigation report). A fragmented fireball can resemble a coordinated formation: fragments naturally retain similar trajectories rather than being separate craft manoeuvring together. The analysis says intense nighttime light, accentuated by cloudiness, can make trails look smooth, uniform and artificial, like controlled beams. Sudden appearance and rapid disappearance leave little time to assess them and strengthen an impression of structure or intention.
Technical analysis identifies the origin with certainty as atmospheric entry of a meteoroid that fragmented. Early breakup explains separate, uniform, parallel trails. GEIPAN states that the vivid red, green and blue colours are physically compatible with atmospheric ionization and reflect meteoroid mineral composition. Gradual extinction over 1–2 seconds also fits a fireball going out aloft.
The source further describes heavy cloud at the time, in contrast with the witness’s clear-sky opening. It suggests that cloud scattered and smoothed the trails, reinforcing an impression of sharply defined, uniform “rays.” All characteristics support atmospheric entry. The conclusion is strengthened by exact temporal correlation: three independent witnesses in Nice and Antibes reported fireballs to Vigie-Ciel at the same instant.
GEIPAN finds the investigation reduces the strangeness and classifies the case A: atmospheric entry of a fireball.
