Case description
On 19 December 2025 at 18:05, a lone witness walking a dog in Samoreau (77) saw 3 perfectly aligned yellow balls of light in the night sky. They seemed “stationary” or “moving a little.” The witness watched for 5 minutes, taking 2 videos and 1 photograph, then resumed the walk and stopped observing. Only 1 account was collected.
The case has good evidential support: a complete account supplemented by a cognitive interview and 2 videos usable in the investigation. GEIPAN defines evidential consistency as the amount of information in an account considered reliable and objectively supported.
The witness's sense of strangeness came from being unable to identify the phenomenon immediately, its complete silence and its very slow movement.
Investigation checks found a light northwest wind of 6–7 km/h. The source states that this corresponds to the northern component of the UAP's north-south movement inferred from the videos, while the southern component relates to the object's slow ascent. On that basis it identifies a windborne object (see appendix).
The spherical shapes and yellow color fit sky lanterns, also called Thai lanterns, probably released nearby. La Maison des Cultures de Thomery in the neighboring village had released several lanterns in September 2024 for the priory's inauguration. However, when contacted, the organization denied releasing any on the sighting date.
The lantern hypothesis therefore reduces the perceived strangeness. GEIPAN classifies the case A: windborne sky lanterns.
