Case description

On 1 January 2026 between 06:35 and 06:40, a driver traveling from Briis-sous-Forges toward Limours (91) saw a circular yellow-orange light ahead. It was diffuse and faint enough to look at without glare. He perceived a sphere with slightly irregular edges, low above the apparent horizon, which disappeared below it after a few moments. The observation lasted under a minute in dark conditions shortly before daybreak. The case has good evidential strength* despite a single account and no usable recording. The technical questionnaire, sketches and route reconstruction allow the witness's directional and angular estimates to be compared with astronomy and recorded atmospheric conditions. *Under GEIPAN's criteria, evidential strength is the amount of information collected for an account that is considered reliable and objectively substantiated. The strangeness mainly involved the unusual orange appearance and apparent rapid descent toward the horizon. Its seeming to accompany the car reinforced that impression. Directional and astronomical analysis closely matches the UAP with the Moon at about azimuth 309°, very low above the horizon. Low elevation combined with clouds in that direction explains rapid disappearance through progressive obscuration. The yellow-orange color and slightly altered outline also fit the Moon near the horizon under unfavorable atmospheric conditions. The apparent accompanying movement is a familiar perspective effect: the distant Moon changes little in apparent position as the observer moves, while nearby landscape passes quickly. The investigation finds no observed feature requiring another hypothesis. All available data identify the setting Moon. The case is classified A: observation of the Moon.
