In a letter written after a 17 July 1963 Melbourne Herald article, the correspondent reported an event at about 8:35 p.m. on approximately 1 July, allowing a one-day uncertainty. While hanging washing, the witness looked upward and saw what was described as an explosion-like scattering of many star-like points over a large area, followed by a very bright light shooting upward from the center and leaving a broad trail. The event was said to last no more than about three seconds. The surviving page does not preserve the writer’s location or a later phase of the event.
