Case description
On 15 September 1967, fourteen-year-olds Carol Luke and Ruth Passini watched a bright object from an upstairs window in rural Winsted, Connecticut. Around 8:45–9 p.m. it appeared beyond a barn, moving and changing between bright white and dull red. About half an hour later they heard a brief putting sound and saw small figures near the barn and roadside mailbox. Two or three figures appeared at different stages, with disproportionately large heads.
They described the object dimming when a car approached and the figures disappearing into darkness. Their mothers and other nearby residents supplied varying degrees of support for an unusual light, but did not independently establish the entire sequence. The girls initially thought the figures were children; the idea that they were connected with the object developed later.
Ted Thoben investigated for NICAP, followed by Fred Ayer and Wadsworth for the Colorado project. Condon Case 33 records discrepancies over number, movements, brightness, distance and whether the object ever fell below the horizon. Nearby swamp fires and a motor scooter were considered, without a conclusive match. The investigators found no significant physical evidence and judged the case weak and inconclusive. That assessment supports uncertainty, not a demonstrated hoax or confirmed alien landing. The silhouettes in the plate deliberately avoid invented anatomical detail.
