Criacao do Cabrito entity encounter — February 1, 1968

Serafim Vieira Sebastião, a thirty-six-year-old watchman at the Cabrito ammunition installation on Terceira in the Azores, described an encounter during the night spanning January 31 and February 1, 1968. He said his transistor radio failed while he listened to football, followed by a buzzing sound and an intense approaching light. He telephoned superiors and went outside again to investigate. The fuller Portuguese account describes an oval metallic vehicle about six metres long and three high, topped by a glass tower with a small railing. Four humanlike occupants were reported: two inside, apparently working at a desk, and two outside by the balustrade. They wore lead-coloured suits and helmets with glass visors; he did not see their faces. After he aimed his flashlight toward them, the object allegedly moved abruptly and sent an intense light toward him. He said he fell and remembered nothing more. The narrative reports hospital attendance and a subsequent official inquiry. Portuguese ufologists disputed a balloon explanation attributed to authorities, but their arguments and the explanation should both remain attributed rather than treated as settled findings. Later RTP archival programmes contain Sebastião’s retrospective testimony. Sources differ over evening versus after-midnight timing, and brief catalogues reduce the crew to the two visible by the railing.
