Case description
At about 9 a.m. on 31 July 1968, Luce Fontaine, a 31-year-old farmer on Réunion, was gathering grass for his rabbits in an acacia clearing near the kilometre-21 area of Plaine des Cafres. He reported an oval cabin roughly twenty-five metres away, apparently suspended four or five metres above the ground. Its dark-blue ends framed a lighter, windowlike central section, with unusual foot- or goblet-shaped projections above and below.
Through the center he saw two small individuals, approximately ninety centimetres tall, enclosed in bulky, segmented coveralls compared with the Michelin figure. Helmets partly obscured their faces. One turned bodily toward him while the other turned its head. Both then faced away. A brilliant flash, heat and a strong gust followed; within seconds the object had vanished. Fontaine said he inspected the spot and saw no marks.
He told his wife and the gendarmerie. A contemporary account in Lumières dans la Nuit, translated in Flying Saucer Review, described an inquiry and alleged radioactivity at the location and on clothing. The consulted text supplies no measurement protocol sufficient to establish radiation injury. HUMCAT preserves the encounter with some simplified wording. An unrelated Lake Norman nuclear-plant fragment in the imported ledger has been excluded. Réunion is the French island setting; this is not an open-ocean encounter.
