Case description
Before dawn on January 22, 1971, Stewart and Lyle Leppke were doing farm chores near Peabody, Kansas, when they reportedly noticed a lighted object in a cattle lot. Fuller catalogue retellings identify them as boys, although their precise ages are not given in the accessible summary. The object had small windows and was said to hover only a few feet above the ground.
When they directed their flashlight toward it, they reportedly saw a very small figure moving nearby, estimated at less than two feet tall. The available wording gives no secure face, clothing or limb description. The boys went to the house and told their mother, who contacted the sheriff. They also described the object tipping to one side before accelerating upward and away. It had departed before the officer arrived; an officer witnessing the craft is therefore not part of this account.
The NICAP entry cites HUMCAT 1971-3 and an unspecified newspaper source. The longer sequence preserves a distinction between the boys’ alleged observation and the subsequent family and police response. Without the original newspaper item or investigative file, their exact observation distance, duration and the nature of the small figure remain unsettled. No taking aboard or physical interaction is described, and a detailed extraterrestrial appearance cannot be inferred from the height estimate alone.
