Case description
Robert A. Schmidt’s contemporary Flying Saucer Review report identifies the place as Callery, Pennsylvania, rather than the inherited “Gallery.” At about 8 p.m. on April 14, 1971, Dennis Donaldson was driving Marion Lang from Evans City toward Pittsburgh in a Volkswagen when she noticed a silent yellow-white object beside the road. It crossed ahead, rapidly diminished to a distant point, and returned within a minute.
Following a dirt road, they found it hovering a few feet above a ploughed field roughly eighty yards away. Donaldson estimated a width of twenty-five to thirty feet and height of twenty feet. They compared its profile to two bowls joined at their rims. The air smelled unusually sweet; mist surrounded the object. Schmidt considered nearby marshy ground a possible source of that mist. A white shaft of light projected upward around 8:20 p.m.
Three round lower portholes and at least four vertical upper windows reportedly showed reddish flickering light. Lang then noticed two large humanlike silhouettes in upper windows. Their estimated ten-foot height depended on uncertain distance and scale. Frightened, the couple drove away while the object remained. Schmidt recorded their accounts that night and visited the location with them and D. Hillman the next day; no ground marks were found. The report explicitly records no vehicle malfunction. A much later newspaper retrospective gives April 11, but the contemporary report consistently uses April 14.
