Case description
At about 2 a.m. one night in December 1973, a 28-year-old Vilvorde resident identified as V.M. noticed green light and a scraping noise in his small walled garden. Through the kitchen window he described a short figure in a luminous green suit, using a detector-like implement over brick rubble. Its equipment included a helmet and backpack connection, belt-mounted red box, gloves and boots. Pointed ears and bright yellow eyes stood out against a dark face.
After responding to flashlight signals, the figure allegedly walked up and over the wall. Minutes later a five-metre disc rose beyond it, with orange upper and claret lower surfaces, a transparent cupola, colored lamps and a lightning-mark emblem. V.M. said the figure was visible inside before the object accelerated upward. No marks or missing material were found the next morning.
Jean-Luc Vertongen published the investigation. The exact day varies among catalogues, so the plate uses December rather than asserting the ledger's December 19. Investigator Auguste Meessen later challenged the account's interpretation in an open letter, citing the witness's description of earlier visions and changes in the helmet detail. Meessen's retrospective explanation is an investigator's assessment, not a clinical diagnosis. The record therefore preserves the unusual story and the material dispute together; its intricate imagery is not evidence that the event physically occurred.
