Case description

During the night of June 10–11, 1976, twenty-year-old Hélène Giuliana was driving home after visiting a cinema in Valence, France. Her route followed the RN 531 near the Le Martinet bridge. In the darkness an intense orange light appeared ahead, low and close to the road. When she approached, her Renault 4L lost power and its headlights went out. Giuliana tried to restart the car but the engine would not respond. The orange phenomenon remained roughly twenty meters ahead, bright enough to dominate the roadway and surrounding trees. Her continuous waking memory then became uncertain. When normal awareness returned, close to two hours appeared to have passed, although the exact duration and the means used to estimate it require caution. The initial report therefore contains three principal elements: the orange light, the simultaneous vehicle failure and an unexplained interval. It did not originally include a continuous memory of figures carrying her away or an examination. Those scenes were described later during a hypnotic session arranged by investigator André Revol with a physician identified in the newspaper account as Étienne D. Under hypnosis Giuliana said that two short figures approached the Renault, removed her from the car, covered her face and carried her toward the light. Inside a rounded room she recalled being restrained on a table. A handheld instrument projected luminous circles across her clothing or body. She then described being returned to the car before the orange light rose rapidly and disappeared. Journalist Jean-Louis Ruchon reported the hypnosis account in Le Dauphiné Libéré on August 13. The newspaper article is important because it identifies the people involved and dates the public expansion of the story. It does not convert hypnosis into an objective recording. Hypnotically elicited memories can be vivid and sincerely believed while remaining vulnerable to suggestion, reconstruction and confabulation. The stalled car and unexplained time can have ordinary as well as extraordinary causes. Mechanical or electrical failure, stress, fatigue, an altered state, inaccurate time estimation or later narrative shaping remain possible. No authenticated photograph of the light or figures, instrument record, medical finding or recovered artifact independently confirms the later abduction sequence. The Atlas retains CE4 because the published case specifically alleges involuntary removal and an examination. It also keeps the classification subordinate to the evidence label: the close encounter beyond the car is hypnosis-derived, not part of an uninterrupted waking account. A separate imported listing under the name Hotstun appears to catalogue the same episode and should not be treated as an independent witness or event. The portrait makes that evidentiary boundary visible. It shows Giuliana beside her powerless 1976 Renault 4L, shielding her eyes from the intense orange light near the bridge. Exactly two small figures appear only as indistinct silhouettes within the glow, representing later hypnosis rather than clearly witnessed forms. The image is an illustrative reconstruction, not proof of an abduction.

The three Atlas entries are source-identified place aliases for this account. Conscious car/light/missing-time memories are distinguished from the occupants and examination described under hypnosis. The film says she remained doubtful of those trance recollections.
