Case description
Shortly after midnight on 4 January 1977, an automotive-plant technician identified by the initials C.A.C.M. was training his German shepherd in a pine grove at Carapito, in Portugal's Beira Alta region. The dog became agitated and stayed close to its owner. The man then noticed a dark metallic object hovering near the trees, approximately ten metres above the ground.
Later summaries describe an ellipsoid six or seven metres across with a dark dome, accompanied by a repetitive beeping or radio-static-like sound. Near it stood a bulky humanlike silhouette, estimated at about 1.8 to two metres tall. No dependable facial details, skin color or clothing description survive in the consulted account. A silver-bright flash was followed by the disappearance of both object and figure.
The witness reportedly suffered headaches afterward. His dog's death in August was later included in the story, but an eight-month interval and the absence of a demonstrated mechanism prevent treating it as a proven consequence. CEAFI's June–July 1978 bulletin is the cited investigation source. Later retellings also discuss a separate Carapito encounter on January 3; its witnesses, alleged ground effects and measurements must not be merged into this man's experience.
